JLG Showcases New Training Center

Last week JLG showed off it's sparkling new training center to a group of construction and rental media journalists and local newspaper editors. The new facility, located at the company headquarters in McConnellsburg, PA, covers more than 17,000 sq ft, with 7,000 sq ft of classroom, dining and office space, 10,000 sq ft of spotless service bays, with a 4-acre proving ground right outside the shop doors. The high-tech structure has enough wi-fi power to allow 250 devices to access the service. An impressive simulator, which "operates" a JLG boom lift and telehandler, is remotely accessible to registered students, as well as those in the training center.

Rick Smith, senior director, product training, shows how JLG's new simulator supports active training. Complete with sound effects, the system can be accessed in the classroom or remote.

JLG staff said they had been training about 4,000 people annually and expect to move that number to about 6,000. Training programs cover:

  • Service Training: Courses are designed to provide service personnel with an understanding of the construction, operation and maintenance of JLG equipment. Successful completion of this course (passing grade of 80% or better) qualifies graduates to perform periodic inspections, prescribed maintenance and warranty repairs on specific JLG equipment.

  • AWP Operator Training: One-day (8 hours) Aerial Work Platform operator safety training based on the requirements of the American National Standards Institute/Scaffold Industry Association (ANSI/SIA) standards and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards.

  • Telehandler Operator Training: One-day (8 hours) JLG telehandlers operator safety training based on the requirements of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) standards and the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) standards.

  • Train-the-Trainer: This three-day (24 hours) course qualifies industry personnel to conduct JLG AWP and telehandler operator training programs that fulfill ANSI/SIA standards, ISO standards, and OSHA regulations.

Smith, with more than 25 years of experience in training, says the concept for the new facility's design leveraged off of his experience. The facility is roomy and bright, the main classroom is open and comfortable, and the shop would be the envy of any mechanic.

Smith developed a program map that incorporates classroom training and self-paced e-learning, and facilitated e-learning or online courses, including introductory e-learning courses for boom lifts, scissor lifts, and telehandlers. He also introduced new classroom training packages and programs that standardize JLG training globally.
