Sharp Rebound Coming for Construction

In an article posted by the AEM, Wells Fargo Economist Anika Khan projects a sharp rebound in non-residential construction. Speaking to attendees at a regional AEM membership event, hosted at Cummins headquarters in Columbus, Ind., Khan said manufacturing and commercial building construction will lead the way.

Underlying fundamentals for the construction industry, and economy as a whole, are better than the numbers indicate, she noted, particularly with the first quarter showing GDP shrinking.  Click here for the AEM's article. You'll also find Khan's complete presentation on that page.

Khan said key factors holding back economic growth in the first half of 2015 included:
  • Harsh winter weather
  • The West Coast port dispute
  • A stronger dollar
  • Lower oil prices

While there are lingering effects from that last two points, a stronger labor market will help the economy grow.
